Designing a Kitchen

When designing a kitchen what should you consider first?

When designing a kitchen, the very first thing you should consider is the workflow and layout. This is the foundational element upon which all other design decisions are built. Think about how you’ll use the space. A well-designed kitchen should be organized around the “kitchen triangle” or “work zones.”

Here’s a breakdown of what that means and why it’s the most crucial starting point:

The Kitchen Triangle
Traditionally, this refers to the three main work areas: the sink, the refrigerator, and the stove/cooktop. The idea is to place these three elements in a triangular formation so you can move efficiently between them without obstacles. A well-proportioned triangle minimizes walking distance while also preventing them from being too close together, which would create a cramped workspace. Work Zones
A more modern and often more practical approach, especially in larger kitchens, is to think about different zones for different tasks:
  • The Food Storage Zone:
This includes the refrigerator and pantry.
  • The Prep Zone:
This is where you’ll do most of your chopping and mixing. It should be near the sink and have ample counter space.
  • The Cooking Zone:
This contains the stove, oven, and microwave.
  • The Cleaning Zone:
This is the sink and dishwasher area.
By focusing on the workflow and layout first, you ensure that the kitchen is functional and efficient. All other considerations, such as cabinet styles, colors, lighting, and appliance choices, can then be layered on top of this solid foundation. A beautiful kitchen that is difficult to use is a poorly designed kitchen.
