Adding Space
What are the different kinds of loft conversion?
There are several types of loft conversions, including roof light, dormer, hip-to-gable, and mansard conversions. The best type for a particular home depends on factors like the roof’s shape, the type of home, budget, and local planning regulations.
Here’s a breakdown of the main types:
Roof Light/Velux Conversions:
This is the simplest and most cost-effective option, involving adding roof windows (or skylights) to the existing roof. It generally doesn’t require planning permission, but still needs building regulations approval. This type is best for homes with ample existing headroom and doesn’t involve significant structural changes.
Dormer Conversions:
This involves adding a dormer (a projection from the roof) to create additional headroom and space. It’s a popular choice, particularly for adding a bedroom or study. Dormer conversions often fall under permitted development, making them a straightforward option.
Hip-to-Gable Conversions:
This type extends the hipped side of the roof to create a vertical gable end, significantly increasing headroom and usable space. This conversion is ideal for detached, semi-detached, and end-of-terrace homes with three or more roof pitches.
Mansard Conversions:
This involves transforming the sloping side of the roof into an almost vertical wall (at least 72 degrees), creating a large amount of headroom.
Mansard conversions often require planning permission and are generally more expensive.
